A DAY after pronouncing that they had been leaving the Congress, 12 of the birthday party’s 17 MLAs in Meghalaya stated they had been merging with the Trinamool Congress, whilst regretting that they’d didn’t “prevail upon the leadership” in spite of a couple of journeys to Delhi. The TMC has now emerged as the primary Opposition birthday party within the Assembly, changing the Congress.
Addressing a press convention in Shillong, Mukul Sangma, who used to be Meghalaya leader minister from 2010 to 2018, stated the Congress had failed “to respond to the call of duty” as the biggest participant within the Opposition. “I am sorry to say that in spite of all our efforts and endeavours, it (a solution) seems to be elusive… We tried our best to prevail upon the leadership and kept on making trips after trips to Delhi, which should have been the other way round. But even after that we failed to prevail upon the leadership,” Sangma, who used to be accompanied through MLA Charles Pyngrope, stated.
“There is a need for a strong pan-India alternative as a political party. And this is based on the perception that the Congress is failing to respond to its call of duty as the main Opposition party,” he stated, including: “We cannot fight the BJP with kid gloves, and through lip service.”
The MLAs submitted a letter to the Speaker announcing they had been merging with the TMC on Wednesday evening. The building comes as a blow to the Congress management, that had held a sequence of conferences with Sangma, together with one final week, to take a look at and finish the rise up.
The Congress that had emerged because the single-largest birthday party in Meghalaya after the 2018 Assembly polls, successful 21 seats in a House of 60, is now down to 5 MLAs.
Meghalaya Congress leader Vincent H Pala stated they are going to “fight back very hard” in opposition to the MLAs leaving and becoming a member of arms with the TMC. But the anti-defection legislation isn’t appropriate in opposition to them as they account for two-third of the birthday party power within the House.
Out of the 12 MLAs who crossed facets, 4 constitute the Khasi-Jaintia Hills area, whilst 8 are from the Garo Hills. The 12 come with Sangma’s spouse Dikkanchi D Shira, daughter Miani D Shira and more youthful brother Zenith Sangma.
Referring to the 2018 verdict and the BJP cobbling in combination a coalition to deprive the Congress of energy, Sangma stated: “Why could we not form a government despite being the single-largest party? Did we try despite being the largest Opposition party in the country?”
Sangma and Pyngrope instructed that political strategist Prashant Kishor, who has been related to the TMC, helped clinch the deal, and that they’d arrived on the determination with “complete sense of responsibility and commitment”, and after “exhaustive due diligence and analysis”.
Sangma stated Kishor “can make a difference… be a friend as well”. “When we interacted, I felt we shared the same objective, with the interests of people, the nation and the state superseding everything else.”
Pyngrope, a former Speaker, stated Kishor’s “views, ideas and vision to fight divisive forces” matched what they’d in thoughts to fill the “void created by the ineffectiveness” of the Congress.
